Are You Ready to Get Real?

You may already be somewhat familiar with the upcoming changes in identification requirements for air travel. But the deadline for it has moved SO MANY TIMES, you may be wondering if you even need an updated ID card at all. Well, no need to wonder anymore. The time has FINALLY been set for May 7, 2025. So the question is…are you ready to get Real?

What Is Real ID?

The Real ID Act establishes basic security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. The Act was passed in response to the security vulnerabilities highlighted by the 9/11 attacks. Its goal is to enhance the documentation used for flights and to guarantee identity verification at airport security.

How Do I Know If My ID Is Compliant?

You can verify if your current driver’s license or state-issued ID is Real ID-compliant by looking for a star at the top of your card.

If My ID Is Not Compliant, How Do I Get A Compliant ID?

To obtain a Real ID-compliant card, you’ll have to provide specific documentation like:

  • Documents showing your full legal name and date of birth (like a birth certificate)
  • Your Social Security Number
  • Two proofs of principal residence (like utility bills that are in your name)
  • Or in my case, I brought my passport and didn’t need some of the other items.

Your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be able to provide details on your state’s application process. And they’ll let you know the specific documents you need to bring with you.

What Do I Do If I Can’t Get a Real ID by May 7?

You’ll need to bring an alternative form of identification – like a passport. But to ensure a smooth travel experience, you should really get a Real-ID compliant card well before the deadline.
