Is Alcatraz Really the Most Haunted Place in America?

San Francisco Bay is BEAUTIFUL. There is just something special about the blue of the bay and the deep orange of the bridge. This leads to an important question. Why build a prison there? Was it just for the extra cruelty of making the inmates look at it and know they could never enjoy it? What does it do to a person – being locked up on a cold rock in the middle of paradise? Who Was on the Stairway Each Night?

I come by my love of spooky things quite naturally. You see, my momma is also a lover of spine tingling ghost stories and she passed this magic down to me. Our shared desire to see an actually haunted place has taken me to some pretty interesting places – like a darkened corridor in an old jail, the derelict property of an abandoned asylum, and the very edge of England. Knowing me like he does, he planned a curated weekend around all the things I love…history, ghost stories, folk lore, live music, great food, art, and alcohol. If that sounds like fun to you too…join us as we unpack our first day in New Orleans and go chasing ghosts (among other things) in the Big Easy. First, let’s talk about where we stayed…

  • Adventure at the Famous Eloise Asylum

One lonely, boring evening about 20 years ago, I convinced a friend to go on a ghost hunt. I had never done a ghost hunt before, mind you, but I had a solid plan. Step 1: Go somewhere people claim is haunted. Step 2: Look around. On our way back home from William Ganong Cemetery, the most haunted cemetery in Michigan, I got a little lost. I was heading back toward the freeway when I came across a complex of buildings surrounding a tall, brick smoke stack. My Spidey senses made me turn into the driveway for my first Adventure at the Famous Eloise Asylum. The History Below is a…
