Why Do We Love to Get Lost?

People have sometimes asked us why we travel so much. For people who are home-bodies, the idea of packing up and going somewhere they’d never been before, seems unappealing or maybe even a bit frightening. But for us, there is just something about going on an adventure. What about you? Do you love to get lost too? Let’s take a minute to unpack why in the world we grab our bags and hit the road.

A change of scenery is good for the soul

Just…Wow.

Living in Michigan and not participating in winter sports, means I’ve spent a lot of time indoors. And as much as I like my home, after a while there is a little alarm that says, “it’s time to move.” If you live somewhere with great year-round weather, I can help you relate. Remember April 2020, when you just finished watching “The Tiger King” and were looking up “How to Make Your Own Sourdough Bread” on the internet? It’s like that for us ’round about February 1st.

The challenge can be rather fun

He CRACKS me up!

We agree that flight delays and navigating public transportation can be stressful. But pushing through to your destination makes you feel a little like the hero in your own story. You overcame and you saw the thing you came to see.

I’m not the only one who feels travel is good for your mental health. You can check out this very scholarly paper from Chun-Chu Chen and James Petrick for lot’s of medical studies on this topic.

Lastly, it may be inherited

As with many things, we may be able to blame our parents! Growing up, my family, just like the Griswolds, loaded up the family wagon and hit the road. My earliest memories include spending time at a cabin in Gaylord, Michigan, visiting a submarine in Virginia, and riding on my uncle’s shoulders to Mammoth Cave.

So what do you think?

Do you love to get lost too? If you do, know you’re with your tribe. We understand the need to find the best gear to pack the best suitcase or the desire to eat in the oldest restaurant in every state. Maybe home bodies won’t really ever “get us” but that won’t stop us from gearing up and hitting the road.
