The Very Best of Beantown
Maybe you’re in town for the fun run from Hopkinton to downtown Boston. Or maybe you’re a sports fan and want to make your way to Fenway. Whatever the reason, let us help you plan your trip with the very best of Beantown.
First up…where you should eat
The Union Oyster House
Do you know how many times we visit the Union Oyster House when we’re in Boston? EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. It’s THAT good. You can choose to eat family style in the dining room but we usually choose to pull a couple seats up to their cozy bar and talk “running” with all the athletes nearby. They have a decent craft beer selection and the prices are very reasonable.
Fancy a beer?
The Green Dragon Tavern
There is NO SHORTAGE of places to have an adult beverage in Boston but The Green Dragon Tavern has some advantage over all the others:
- They have a very cozy bar
- A great selection of craft beer
- Live music on the weekend
- They’re considered the oldest bar in the US (there are some disputes to this claim)
- And Paul Revere and his buddies use to drink here.
So if it was good enough for them, then who are we to say otherwise?
Be sure you check this out
The morning tour at Fenway
Not only will you get to walk on the field and sit on the Green Monster, you’ll get to walk the halls behind the press box and see all the photos and news articles from more than 100 years of Red Sox history. The price is also really reasonable and the tour guides were the right mix of salty, funny and knowledgeable. (Now that I think about it, that might be my favorite type of person.)
In town for the Marathon?
If you’re in town for the Boston Marathon, don’t believe for a minute that you’ll save time by getting to the expo before they open. We tried that and ended up standing in line behind 200 other people, in a parking garage, waiting for the doors to open. Just wait until they’ve been open 30 minutes and walk right in.
Our best low stress travel tip?
If you really want to try the cannoli’s at Mike’s Pastry, go before noon and beat the rush. If you miss that window, any of the other fine restaurants and bakeries on Hanover street offer pastries that are just as good, although a shade smaller. Also remember, they are a cash only business.
Our best cheap travel tip?
You can play vintage video games for free at the Sam Adams Tap Room and the pours are not only reasonable…they’re quite tasty!
Where you should stay
We’re still working that one out! In 2021 we got a great deal on a VRBO in the North End. Since then, the owners realized they could charge a lot more marathon weekend so we’ve been on the hunt every since. We’ll let you know as soon as we do. So stay tuned!
